Under normal conditions units enter battle as rested and tire out by fighting. Wounded units do not perform as well as healthy ones so it your army has just fought a battle it is advised that you give wounded units a few round to regenerate before using them againg to launch another offensive.

Check out our How to Steal Characters page to find out how you can get the best characters and units for your retinue. Don't create another army until you are able to maintain the growth of gold at 1,000 pieces per turn. For the cost of those units then I can potentially field 3 armies of low/mid tier compared to 1 high tier so they do not look very cost effective until you have more money than you need or run out of allowed armies. You will be able to conduct successful military opertions at the start of the game with one army consisting of 15-16 units. I have not got far enough in any of my campaigns to use any of the high tier units so am interested to see if they are good value. 85% missile block chance is very nice for shielded cavalry. Shielded cavalry are very powerful for dealing with massed ranged archers as well though especially when they get high missile block chance from skills that might end up killing the shock cavalry before they engage and so I often like 2 of each sort of cavalry in my field armies.

As long as you have a solid line of melee infantry and a few spear/halberd units on the flanks plus a few archers and/or crossbows in support then you have an good anvil for your shock cavalry hammer and the artillery help to ensure you bring the enemy to you and weaken then as they approach. Jian Sword Guards have high missile block vs deadly enemy archers, and access to the Wedge formation which makes them deadly for charging into melee.īoth trebs and shock cavalry are important units to field I think and agree they both perform very well. Sabre cavs are accessible but still requires reform points that you may not be spending early game. This is a unique exception worth mentioning: because it is the ONLY cav unit not hidden behind any research. One of the theme of my list is to show that, mathematically speaking, low tier units are very good. The range is important during siege battles when you need to snipe off enemy archers behind walls. Lower dps than archers, but has greater range and much more ammo efficient. For slightly more upkeep it has more ammo and dps than militias.

They actually outdps crossbows vs armored units (53%). Does the same DPS vs units with 20% armor as Jian Sword Guards actually. Highest EHP out of all the starting troops. The Dragon units usually come with something special: Azure dragons can shoot, Jade dragons are pretty much cataphracts with their insanely high defenses. Tier 3 units are expensive, while not doing much more damage, has a lot more survivability. Basic units are very cost efficient, tier 2 units have formations which is powerful in situations (mainly vs arrow fire and wedge). There is a certain elegance when it comes to units in 3k (although imo there needs to be more diversity still, cavalries are especially lacking).

No Heavy Lancer Cav, no Defenders of Earth, no Onyx Archers, no Yellow Dragons, and barely any of the yellow cav either since shock cav is so good on the charge.Īnyone have good experiences with these units I haven't used yet? Defenders of Earth are also pretty darn nice albeit extremely short ranged. Why do they require tech unlocks, again? Azure Dragons are quite nice although not spectacular. I haven't bothered with peasant bands because, well, they look weaker than even your standard militia units. I haven't gotten to try out many of the unlockable units. Repeating Crossbows are just garbage, unfortunately. Ji Militia and spear guards are just plain meh.Īs for blue units, I quite like taking a combination of medium archers and medium crossbows for both regular and armor piercing damage respectively. They're just standard meat shields, though they do seem to fair better in terms of kill counts than the green units. None of the purple units are exactly superb. Nothing much else has stood out to me as "Oh, this unit is really good!". I generally go for the medium shock cav for a bit more damage and lasting power. As for shock cav, even the weak lancer militia is exceedingly good. One of my rank 10 trebs with increased accuracy even often gets up to around 500. Trebuchets with flaming shot regularly rack up upwards of 200 kills easily each fight. In general, what are your go-to units that you've found to be well-performing? For me it's trebuchets and shock cavalry.
